AXA Health has expanded its online outpatient services, adding urology, neurology and cardiology to its existing digital assessment options, giving its members faster access to specialist support without needing to attend an appointment in person.
The new care pathways will be available to its Individual, SME, and Large Corporate customers aged 18 and over, with outpatient specialist consultations included as part of their membership.
They build on AXA’s existing online outpatient services for muscles, bones and joints, digestive health and dermatology and aim to provide advice and recommendations within three working days.
According to AXA Health, conditions across cardiology, neurology and urology account for a significant proportion of its claims (12.6% of the insurer’s claims spend in 2026), underscoring how important these specialities are for members.
The online outpatient services are designed to connect AXA Health’s members with specialist support quickly, wherever they live in the UK, while reducing the number of unnecessary diagnostics, procedures and face-to-face referrals.
Heather Smith, CEO of AXA Health, said: “We know how worrying it can be when you’re facing health concerns and aren’t sure what to do next. By expanding our online outpatient services, we are expanding access to high-demand specialities and making coordinated, specialist support available to our members when they need it most. The introduction of our digestive and dermatology online outpatient services has been really successful and, recognising the growing need for support across neurology, cardiology and urology, we’ve strengthened that offering.”
Members with a referral from their GP can complete an online clinical assessment at home or work before a specialist reviews it. The specialist assessments are delivered in partnership with HBSUK, a CQC-regulated, specialist-led online outpatient provider within the AXA Group.
Among the services included are:
Members with a qualifying GP referral start by answering a few questions to check whether the service is right for them, then are connected to HBSUK to complete their online assessment. It’s worth highlighting that a qualified, experienced clinician in the relevant speciality - not an AI tool - reviews every assessment in full.
Following the expert review, members receive guidance on the next steps, which may include reassurance and self-help advice to manage symptoms, recommendations for prescribed medication, or arrangements for at-home or in-person tests where appropriate.
For most conditions, using the service counts as a specialist consultation. It will affect any outpatient limit, specialist consultations limit, or annual contribution the member normally pays towards treatment, as well as any no-claims discount they hold. A phone or video follow-on call counts as an additional consultation. However, the muscles, bones and joints service is treated differently, with any online assessment and online treatment not drawing on these limits.
Chris Steele, founder and editor of myTribe Insurance Experts, said: “Neurology, cardiology and urology are specialities where people often feel the pressure of long waits most, so it’s a sensible area for AXA Health to focus on. Giving members a route to a clinical assessment and a personalised report within days, without needing to leave home, is a valuable feature that should prove valuable for those who can access it.”
