In this Scottish Widows life insurance review, our experts explain its standout feature so that you can decide whether it's the right life insurance policy for you.
Is Scottish Widows good for life insurance?
Scottish Widows life insurance scored 91.93% in myTribe's 2026 life insurance review, earning it a myTribe five-star rating and fourth place in our list of the best UK life insurance providers. myTribe’s experts were particularly impressed by its Customer Reviews & Clarity score and its strong claims performance. Here's a summary of the other key points of our Scottish Widows life insurance review:
- Scottish Widows focuses purely on term life insurance, offering a choice of level, decreasing, or increasing life cover or family income benefit. It does not offer whole of life or over 50s life cover.
- Joint life policies automatically include free Replacement Cover, letting the surviving partner take out a new single policy for the remainder of the term without further underwriting.
- Every Scottish Widows Protect policy includes free access to Scottish Widows Care, which combines RedArc nurse support with Clinic in a Pocket remote GP appointments.
- Scottish Widows Protect is available through financial advisers, while a simplified direct alternative, Plan & Protect, is available online for those aged 18 to 59.

About Scottish Widows: key facts at-a-glance
Scottish Widows has been protecting UK families since 1815, making it one of the longest-established names in British financial services. It's now part of Lloyds Banking Group and sells its individual protection products under two brands: Scottish Widows Protect, its advised policy, and Plan & Protect, a simplified plan that you can buy direct.
The table below summarises some of the key stats about Scottish Widows life insurance:
What life insurance products do Scottish Widows offer?
This review focuses on Scottish Widows Protect and its flagship advised policy for individuals called Personal Protection. However, Scottish Widows also sells a simplified direct alternative for those who don't need a full adviser conversation. Its range of life insurance products includes:
Scottish Widows Protect offers four types of life cover, so you can match your policy to what you're protecting:
You can also choose whether to insure just yourself, or take out joint life cover with a partner. Joint life policies pay out on the first death or terminal illness diagnosis, after which the policy ends. However, its free Replacement Cover means the surviving partner can take out a new single policy without answering fresh medical questions.
Who can apply for Scottish Widows Life Cover?
The table below summarises the main eligibility criteria for Scottish Widows Protect and Plan & Protect life insurance policies:
Scottish Widows Protect includes a package of standard features at no extra cost.
- Terminal illness cover: Life cover includes a payout if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness before the end of your policy term, as well as on death.
- Free accidental death cover: Gives you free temporary cover for up to 90 days while your application is being processed, so you're not left unprotected during underwriting.
- Free mortgage cover: If you're taking out cover for a new mortgage, Scottish Widows Protect includes free temporary cover while your application is assessed.
- Free Replacement Cover on joint policies: If you have joint life cover and one of you dies or is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the survivor can take out a new single policy for the rest of the term without further medical underwriting.
- Optional Life Cover Buyback: If you claim successfully under your critical illness cover, you can buy back your life cover without needing to answer new health questions, so you're not left without protection afterwards.
- Guaranteed Insurability Options: Lets you increase your cover without further life insurance underwriting after certain life events, provided your original cover was accepted on standard terms. Qualifying events include getting married or entering a civil partnership, divorce or dissolution, having or adopting a child, becoming a legal guardian, increasing your mortgage, or a promotion or pay rise.
- Scottish Widows Care: A package of practical and emotional support services included free with every Protect policy. See the section below for full details.

What is Scottish Widows Care and what does it include?
Scottish Widows Care is a free wellbeing package included with every Scottish Widows Protect policy, available to you and your family from day one, whether or not you ever make a claim.
The service has three main strands:
Your Personal Nurse stays with you for as long as you need their support, rather than passing you between different advisers each time you call. Clinic in a Pocket can also issue repeat prescriptions and fit notes, and can refer you for a private specialist appointment where clinically appropriate.
As with similar added-value services from other insurers, Scottish Widows Care isn't a guaranteed contractual benefit so Scottish Widows can amend or withdraw it at any time. This means you shouldn't choose Scottish Widows purely for its Care package.
In addition to the standard features, you can add further protection to your Scottish Widows Protect Personal Protection policy for an extra premium.
Critical illness cover
Critical illness cover pays out if you're diagnosed with, or undergo surgery for, one of 30 full-payment conditions, grouped under five categories: heart and arteries, organs, senses, brain and neurological conditions, and cancer. You'll need to survive at least 10 days after diagnosis for a full-payment claim to be paid.
Scottish Widows also covers 10 further additional-payment conditions, including earlier-stage illnesses, which pay the lower of £30,000 or 25% of your sum assured without reducing your main cover amount or ending your policy. There's no survival period attached to these additional payments.
If you're placed on an NHS or private waiting list for treatment relating to a covered condition, Scottish Widows can make an advance payment of your full cover amount before you've had the procedure, rather than making you wait until after surgery.
Children's critical illness cover
Children's cover is included automatically when you add critical illness cover to a Scottish Widows Protect policy, covering natural, adopted, step and legally guardianed children up to age 22. It pays up to £30,000 if your child is diagnosed with one of the specified conditions, and £10,000 if a covered child dies during the policy term.
Total Permanent Disability
Total Permanent Disability cover can be added alongside your critical illness cover as an extra safeguard, paying out if you become permanently unable to work due to an illness or accident not otherwise covered by your policy.
Premium Protection
Premium Protection is Scottish Widows' waiver of premium option. If you're unable to work due to illness or injury, Scottish Widows will pay your premiums for you. Cover runs until 26 weeks before your 70th birthday, and on joint policies you can choose to add it for one or both lives covered.

The table shows Scottish Widows' scores and rankings in each life insurance category myTribe’s experts measured.
Claims are where Scottish Widows really earns its stars, ranking joint third for Claims Payout & Support thanks to a high payout rate and its commitment to the PDG's Claims Charter. Add strong showings for Customer Reviews & Clarity and Additional Benefits & Options, and you get a policy that rarely puts a foot wrong, even if it doesn't top the table anywhere.
Customer Reviews & Clarity (94%) was Scottish Widows' standout category, landing it second place overall. That reflects two things: customers rate their experience highly on Trustpilot, and Scottish Widows explains its policies in plain, jargon-free language rather than burying the detail in small print.
On the downside, Scottish Widows covers fewer critical illnesses in full than some rivals, though its list of additional conditions helps offset this.

The amount you'll pay for Scottish Widows life insurance depends on factors including your age, health, smoking status, the cover amount you choose, and whether you add critical illness cover or Premium Protection.

What doesn’t Scottish Widows life insurance cover?
As with all UK life insurers, there are some circumstances in which Scottish Widows won't pay a claim. These include:
- Suicide in the first year: Scottish Widows won't pay a death claim if it results from suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury within the first 12 months of the policy.
- Non-disclosure: If you didn't answer application questions honestly and accurately, or failed to disclose a relevant change in circumstances, a claim may not be paid.
- Not meeting the critical illness survival period: Full-payment critical illness claims require you to survive at least 10 days from diagnosis.
- Not meeting the clinical definition: Each critical illness condition has a specific definition related to severity or treatment, and a diagnosis must fully meet this definition for a claim to be paid.
- Missed premium payments: If you stop paying your premiums, your cover will lapse, and you won't be able to make a claim.
