What benefits does Royal London life cover include as standard?

Royal London Personal Menu Plan comes with a package of standard features and support, regardless of which types of cover you choose.

  • Terminal illness cover: Life Cover pays out if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness that meets Royal London's definition, whichever happens first.
  • Free cover before your plan starts: Your cover begins once Royal London has received your completed application and direct debit details, so you are protected before your plan has officially started. This free cover is useful if your life insurance is tied to the completion date of your mortgage.
  • Cover increase options: If accepted on standard terms, you can increase your life cover without new medical evidence after events like marriage or divorce, increasing a mortgage, a rent increase, having or adopting a child, or a pay rise. Personal increases are available if you're under 55, and increases for inheritance tax planning on joint life second event cover are available if you're under 70.
  • Renewable option: If your cover summary shows your term is renewable, you can extend your cover for a further 5 or 10 years when it ends, without answering medical questions.
  • Joint Life Separation: If you have joint cover and you separate or divorce, you can split it into two single life policies without fresh underwriting.
  • Lifestyle review: If your lifestyle changes you can ask Royal London for a lifestyle review. For example, if you have quit smoking, lost weight or stopped a hazardous hobby your premium could be reduced.
  • Helping Hand: A wellbeing and support service included with every Personal Menu Plan. See the section below for full details.

What is Royal London's Helping Hand and what does it include?

Helping Hand is a package of wellbeing and support services included free with every Personal Menu Plan, Diabetes Life Cover and whole of life insurance policy, whether or not you ever make a claim. It can add extra value to your policy beyond just a potential life insurance payout and is available from day one.

The main elements of Royal London’s Helping Hand are:

Category What's included
Wellbeing service Thrive, an NHS-approved mental wellbeing app; 24/7 virtual GP consultations via HealthHero; TrackActive Me physiotherapy advice; and LiveSmart personalised health reports covering nutrition, fitness, sleep and brain function
Helping Hand for recovery Support from a dedicated RedArc nurse for serious physical or mental illness, injury or bereavement affecting you, your partner or your children, even if you're not making a claim
Independent helplines Medical, legal and career helplines providing professional advice and guidance

Source: Helping Hand practical guide.

There's no limit on how many times you can use the online wellbeing services. However, Royal London has discretion over approving any additional support suggested through its dedicated nurse service.

According to Royal London’s latest figures, use of Helping Hand grew in 2025, with GP appointments up 21% and RedArc nurse support up 12%, helping 1,093 customers and their families.

As with similar added value services from other insurers, Helping Hand isn't a guaranteed contractual benefit. This means Royal London can amend or withdraw it at any time, so you shouldn't choose this plan for Helping Hand alone.

What additional benefits can you add to a Royal London life insurance policy?

The Royal London Personal Menu Plan comes with a few extra benefits as standard, but you can also add optional benefits for an additional premium if you want wider protection. These include:

Critical illness cover

Critical illness cover pays out if you're diagnosed with one of 78 defined conditions, or total permanent disability if you choose to include it. 46 conditions pay the full amount of cover, while 32 additional conditions (including 17 early forms of cancer) pay 50% of your cover, up to £35,000, without ending your main cover.

It also includes an advanced surgery benefit. This means if you're placed on an NHS waiting list for one of 13 types of surgery covered under Royal London's full payment conditions (such as coronary artery bypass or heart valve replacement), your claim will be paid early, rather than waiting for the procedure.

Life or critical illness cover

Lets you combine life and critical illness protection into a single payout, so if a critical illness claim is paid, your cover ends and you can't also claim on death or terminal illness later.

Income protection insurance

Adding income protection insurance pays a monthly benefit of up to 65% of the first £60,000 of your pre-tax earnings, plus 50% of anything above that, up to £250,000 a year. You can choose a deferred period of 4, 8, 13, 26 or 52 weeks and a benefit period of 1, 2 or 5 years, or until the end of the policy term.

The cover also includes fracture cover (paying up to £4,000 with no standard exclusions for amateur sports) and a £100-per-night hospital benefit if you're admitted for more than six consecutive nights during your deferred period.

Waiver of premium

If you're unable to work due to illness or injury, adding waiver of premium means Royal London will pay your premiums for you across every cover in your plan. You choose a deferment period of 4, 8, 13, 26 or 52 weeks before payments begin (this is automatically included if you take out Income Protection).

Total Permanent Disability

Can be added to Critical Illness Cover or Life or Critical Illness Cover, paying out if you become permanently disabled and unable to do certain activities, based on a definition agreed when you take out your plan.

Children's benefits (with Critical Illness Cover)

If you choose Critical Illness Cover or Life or Critical Illness Cover, you can also add Children's Critical Illness Cover at either Standard or Enhanced level. You can add, remove or upgrade this cover at any time without providing further medical information.

Enhanced cover includes all 46 core critical illness conditions covered by the adult policy, plus 13 child-specific conditions, including cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and Down's syndrome. It also pays £10,000 if your child dies and includes a conversion option, allowing your child to take out up to £50,000 of their own Critical Illness Cover within six months of the cover ending, without any medical underwriting.

How did Royal London perform in the myTribe 2026 life insurance ratings?

Royal London topped our 2026 life insurance review with a score of 94.54%, the highest of any provider we assessed, earning it a maximum five-star rating and first place overall. The table below breaks down Royal London’s score and rank in each of the life insurance categories we assessed.

Royal London’s term life policy, available through its Personal Menu Plan, performed exceptionally well across several key categories. Royal London ranked first for Cover Types & Limits (100%), Eligibility & Accessibility (98%) and Customer Reviews & Clarity (97%), due to its wide range of payout options, broad life insurance age limits and market-leading Trustpilot customer score.

Royal London also goes further than many other insurers in offering ways to change your life cover once your policy starts. It ranked joint first for Policy Flexibility (96%), thanks to features such as its renewable option, joint life separation, and extensive guaranteed insurability options. It's also one of the few providers that offers the full range of joint life insurance options, including joint life second death and dual life cover.

Our experts picked out Royal London's Lifestyle Flexibility Options as a standout feature. If your policy is accepted on non-standard terms, such as a higher premium because you smoke or an exclusion for a hazardous hobby, you can ask Royal London to review those terms if your circumstances have changed and your risk has reduced.

For example, if you've stopped a risky pastime, Royal London may remove the related exclusion. Likewise, if you've quit smoking or lost weight and maintained it, it may reduce your premium. Rather than leaving you tied to the terms you accepted when the policy started, Lifestyle Review rewards positive, long-term lifestyle changes.

What our experts like about Royal London life insurance

  • Wide range of payout options: level, increasing and decreasing lump sums, plus level and increasing monthly income.
  • High maximum joining age and broad range of term lengths
  • Generous guaranteed insurability options, including up to £1,000,000 of extra cover for inheritance tax planning without new medical evidence.
  • A Lifestyle Review option lets you ask for non-standard terms to be reassessed if you've quit smoking, lost weight or given up a hazardous hobby.
  • Helping Hand is included free with every Menu Plan, offering 24/7 GP access, RedArc nurse support and independent helplines.
  • “Excellent” Trustpilot rating and 86% life insurance customer experience score from Fairer Finance

Where Royal London life insurance falls short

  • You get fewer options to add extra benefits than some life insurers.
  • Children’s critical illness cover is not automatically included if you add critical illness to your policy.
  • The Personal Menu Plan is only available through a financial adviser, so you can't buy it directly online.

Can you get Royal London life insurance with a pre-existing health condition?

Royal London assesses each application individually, so having a pre-existing health condition doesn't automatically rule out cover. Depending on your circumstances, you may be offered standard terms, cover with an additional premium, or cover with specific exclusions.

Royal London also offers a dedicated Diabetes Life Cover product, designed specifically for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who might otherwise find it harder to get life insurance elsewhere. If your diabetes is well managed, providing an annual HbA1c reading to Royal London could reduce your monthly premium by up to 40%, as long as your results show your condition is improving.

What does Royal London life insurance not cover?

As with all UK life insurers, there are some circumstances in which Royal London won't pay a life insurance claim. These include

  • Self-inflicted injury: Royal London won't pay a death claim resulting from intentional self-inflicted injury, unless death occurs more than 12 months after your cover starts or restarts.
  • Exclusions on your cover: Any specific exclusions applied to your plan when you took it out (or when your cover was later reassessed) won't be covered.
  • Non-disclosure: If you or the person covered didn't answer application questions fully, honestly and accurately, or didn't tell Royal London about a relevant change in circumstances before cover started, a claim may not be paid.
  • Cover accepted under the Underwrite Later option: This lets Royal London start your cover before it has finished assessing all your medical evidence, a process that can take up to six months. If, once that assessment is complete, Royal London decides it wouldn't have offered you cover at all, any claim made in the meantime won't be paid, although your premiums will be refunded.
  • Not meeting the terminal illness definition: A terminal illness claim will only be paid if the person covered meets Royal London's specific definition.

Does Royal London pay out on life insurance claims?

Royal London paid 98.4% of all protection claims in 2025, totalling more than £821 million and helping 62,412 customers and families. This includes:

  • 94.2% of Term Life claims paid, worth over £258 million, with an average payout of £85,437
  • 89.3% of Critical Illness claims paid, worth over £197 million, with cancer accounting for 64.3% of all claims
  • 84.7% of Terminal Illness claims paid, worth over £68 million, with an average payment of £133,238
  • 99.9% of Whole of Life claims paid, worth over £282 million

Where claims weren't paid, the most common reason across all cover types was misrepresentation (incorrect or incomplete information provided when applying), followed by the claim not meeting Royal London's specific definition of the condition claimed.

Is Royal London life insurance worth buying in 2026?

Royal London's Personal Menu Plan Life Cover was myTribe’s top-rated life insurance option for 2026. It particularly suits those who value the flexibility to change their cover over time, including increasing cover after a major life event without further underwriting.

That said, Royal London won't be the right life insurance provider for everyone. Its claims payout rates for life insurance, while solid enough, were not the strongest in our review, and its range of optional add-ons is narrower than some rivals'.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Royal London a good life insurance provider?

Yes. Royal London scored 94.54% in our 2026 review, the highest of any provider assessed, earning a myTribe five-star rating and first place in our guide to the 10 rated UK providers. It also has high ratings from Defaqto, Fairer Finance and Trustpilot.

What types of Royal London life insurance can I choose from?

Royal London's Personal Menu Plan offers five payout options: a level, increasing or decreasing lump sum, or a level or increasing monthly income. You can combine life cover with critical illness cover, and income protection within the same plan.

How many critical illness conditions does Royal London cover?

Royal London's Critical Illness Cover covers 78 defined conditions plus total permanent disability. 46 conditions pay the full cover amount, while 32 additional conditions, including 17 early forms of cancer, pay 50% of your cover up to £35,000.

Does Royal London life insurance include children's cover?

Yes, if you add Critical Illness Cover or Life or Critical Illness Cover you can also choose Standard or Enhanced Children's Critical Illness Cover for an extra premium. It covers children from birth to age 22 (or 23 in full-time education). Enhanced cover adds 13 child-specific conditions and pays £10,000 on the death of a child, compared with £5,000 under Standard cover.

What is Royal London's advanced surgery benefit?

If you add critical illness and you’re placed on an NHS waiting list for one of 13 specified types of surgery, such as coronary artery bypass or heart valve replacement, Royal London pays your critical illness claim early, rather than waiting for the surgery to take place.

What is the age limit for Royal London life insurance?

You can take out Royal London life insurance from age 18 to 88. If you want life and critical illness cover the maximum start age falls to 69.

How does Royal London life insurance compare with Aviva?

Both are highly rated UK life insurers with strong life insurance products. Royal London edges ahead overall in our 2026 ratings (94.54% versus Aviva's 92.18%), largely thanks to its wider range of payout types and greater policy flexibility. However, Aviva offers a broader menu of optional extras such as fracture cover and global treatment. A broker comparison based on your circumstances is the best way to decide between them.

Can Royal London increase my life insurance premiums?

Royal London's life insurance premiums are guaranteed and fixed for the term of your cover, except where you've chosen increasing cover, in which case your premium rises each year by 1.2 times your chosen escalation rate.

Can you write Royal London life insurance in trust?

Yes. Royal London supports setting up a trust, including an online trust option for new and existing customers.

Does Royal London life insurance have a cash-in value?

No. Royal London's Personal Menu Plan doesn't have a cash-in value at any time, regardless of which cover you choose. It's pure protection rather than a savings or investment product, so it only pays out if you die, are diagnosed with a terminal illness, or make a valid claim under one of your other benefits. If you stop paying your premiums, your cover ends, and you won't receive any money back.
