Compare your renewal with 2026 prices

Choose your age to see what new customers pay on average today. If your renewal is well above this, it’s worth checking what you could pay. Your own price will depend on your circumstances and the cover you choose.

Average monthly price for one adult, by age
Basic cover£60.84a month
Comprehensive cover£96.34a month

Based on 11,770 new-policy quotes from seven insurers, March 2026. Comprehensive includes outpatient cover (up to £1,000) and therapies.

Can you switch and avoid new exclusions?

Avoiding new exclusions often matters as much as saving money, especially for over-50s. When you compare, you’ll be in one of three positions:

  • Free to switch

You can switch to a new insurer without adding new exclusions.

  • Low risk

You’d need to be re-underwritten, but because you’re in good health, the risk of new exclusions is low.

  • Best to stay

Moving would add new exclusions, so staying put is usually the better option.

A few cases don’t fit neatly, but the choice is always yours.

I found the advice I was being given, and therefore the product I ended up opting for, better matched my needs and came in around £600 less per year!

I got a quote after my annual renewal went up by almost 45%. They pointed out problems with my old policy that would have stopped me making a claim. I got the cover I needed, without paying for something I could never use.

Amazing! I found the whole experience of switching healthcare provider reassuring and hassle free. I regret not switching a few years ago. I would have saved a five figure sum if I had.

I found the information on the myTribe website very helpful, and my options were explained very clearly. I’m now moving to a different provider, on a better policy, at a much reduced premium.

I got a quote after a poor experience with my existing health insurer. They understood exactly what I was looking for and recommended a policy that meets my needs and is more cost effective than my old one. Switching was made easy. Excellent service, thank you!

I was really pleased with the advice and support we got relating to our health insurance enquiry. We have subsequently purchased a policy that was cheaper and with a reputable firm than we were originally going for based on our own enquiries, so thank you!

Why health insurance premiums tend to rise each year

Lots of things can affect your renewal price. These are three of the most common:

Your base price rises

Getting older and rising treatment costs can increase the price before discounts, even if you haven’t claimed.

Claims can hit your discount

Some claims can reduce your no-claims discount (NCD), which can lead to bigger premium rises at renewal.

Your discount can stop growing

Claim-free years build your NCD, but once it reaches the maximum, price rises can feel steeper.

The Exeter

myTribe rating: 5.0 out of 5

Aviva

myTribe rating: 4.5 out of 5

Many ways to manage cost and no upper joining age; claims can cut your discount sharply.

Policy reviewed: Healthier Solutions

Strengths

  • A choice of excesses, outpatient limits and an NHS wait option to manage cost.
  • No maximum joining age.
  • Each member has their own no-claims discount.

Weaknesses

  • Any claim over £250 drops your no-claims discount three levels, regardless of size.
  • Reducing outpatient cover also limits some hospital benefits.
  • Three claims for the same mental health condition trigger a chronic-condition exclusion.
Get my personalised comparison

AXA Health

myTribe rating: 4.5 out of 5

Flexible cover choices and a shorter look-back for some past conditions; stricter exclusions for others.

Policy reviewed: AXA Health Plan

Strengths

  • Each member can choose from four blocks of cover.
  • A three-year medical-history look-back for many conditions, rather than the usual five.
  • Physiotherapy and osteopathy without a GP referral, up to ten sessions.

Weaknesses

  • Previous cancer is excluded regardless of how long ago it occurred.
  • A five-year look-back still applies to certain conditions, including diabetes and mental health.
  • This plan is mainly sold direct by AXA, so it may not appear in every comparison.

  • Up to 45 days of inpatient mental health treatment.
  • Complex diagnostic scans are covered in full as standard.

Weaknesses

  • No traditional no-claims discount or published rules on how claims change renewals.
  • No consultant fee agreements, so specialist charges could leave a shortfall.

Make sure a cheaper quote isn’t a compromise

A lower premium can come with different cover or a higher excess. Check these four details against your current policy before you switch.

  1. black tick icon
Keep cover for existing conditions: Check your current conditions would still be covered, and ask about any new exclusions.
  2. black tick icon
Keep the hospitals you want: Check your preferred hospitals are included, and whether you can choose your specialist.
  3. black tick icon
Check what you’d pay to claim: Compare excesses and limits on tests and treatment. A lower premium can mean paying more yourself.
  4. black tick icon
Check how claims affect renewals: Ask how a claim would change your no-claims discount, and whether you can protect it.

If a cheaper quote means losing cover you value, staying put may be the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if I’m overpaying?

Compare your renewal with fresh personal quotes for the benefits you want. Our research averages give you a starting point, but a higher premium alone doesn’t prove you’re overpaying: the cover, excess and policy terms may differ.

Can I save without reducing my cover?

It may be possible, but savings and matching cover aren’t guaranteed. When you compare, check the benefits, limits and terms that matter to you, not just the price.

How do I find the best policy for me?

Start with the care you want access to and the budget you’re comfortable with. Then compare benefits, hospitals, cover limits and the excess alongside the premium. The right policy is the one that fits your needs, rather than simply the lowest price.

Will I get the new customer prices shown here?

Not necessarily. These are average quotes from our March 2026 research, not offers or a promised saving. Your age, postcode, medical history and chosen cover affect your own quotes. Use the figures as a guide, then get a personal comparison.

Can I switch without new exclusions?

It may be possible, but it depends on your medical history and the new insurer’s underwriting terms. Check which conditions covered by your current policy would remain covered, and get any new exclusions explained. Keep your current policy in place until the new terms are confirmed.

Is the comparison free, and do I have to switch?

Our introduction service is free, and there’s no obligation to buy or switch. We introduce you to a broker who discusses your requirements and provides quotes. We may receive commission from that broker. They’ll explain their service and any costs before you go ahead.
