Freedom Health Insurance has introduced a new physiotherapy pathway offering quick access to treatment for musculoskeletal condition.

The service, called Freedom Physiotherapy, will be delivered in partnership with Ascenti Physio and is designed to improve access to care and support earlier intervention.

Freedom said the new pathway reflects high demand for quicker access to treatment for musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, joint issues and muscle strains and sprains.

Nationwide coverage through Ascenti partnership

Through its partnership with Ascenti, Freedom members will have access to a network of more than 300 clinics and 300+ physiotherapists nationwide. The scale of this network means that around 90% of the UK population lives within five miles of an Ascenti clinic, making in-person care accessible when required.

Kevin Doyle, Chief Commercial Officer at Ascenti, said: "This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible musculoskeletal care that puts patients first. By combining Freedom’s member-focused approach with Ascenti Physio’s clinical and digital expertise across our national network, we are well-positioned to deliver timely, effective treatment that supports better outcomes and helps people return to what matters most to them.”

How Freedom’s new physiotherapy pathway works

A key feature of the new service is speed of access. According to Freedom, 98% of initial physiotherapy assessments are completed within one working day, allowing members to begin their recovery journey much sooner than through traditional healthcare routes.

Members can begin treatment without needing a GP referral by contacting the Freedom claims team directly. They will then be offered an initial 30-minute virtual consultation with a qualified physiotherapist to review their symptoms and medical history, assess mobility and pain levels and identify possible causes of the issue.

Following the initial virtual assessment, patients are guided into the most appropriate treatment pathway, which may include:

  • Self-managed rehabilitation through guided exercises and practical advice
  • Virtual physiotherapy delivered through a structured digital programme
  • In-person physiotherapy, which is provided at one of Ascenti’s nationwide clinics

Hoosh Mires, Chief Operating Officer at Freedom Health Insurance, said. “We are seeing growing demand for faster access to care, particularly for musculoskeletal conditions where early intervention can significantly improve outcomes. Freedom Physiotherapy is a natural extension of our Freedom 360 digital health and wellbeing toolkit, which is focused on identifying gaps in traditional pathways and introducing practical, accessible support when members need it.”

Freedom will cover the full cost of the initial virtual assessment with no excess applied, while any follow-up treatment is covered subject to the member’s policy excess and outpatient limits. The physiotherapy pathway will only be available to members who have outpatient cover, which includes physiotherapy benefits as part of their health insurance.

Chris Steele, founder and editor of myTribe Insurance Experts, said: “Freedom’s decision to add a fast-track physiotherapy pathway will add clear value for members, particularly given how common musculoskeletal issues are. Faster access to treatment and a streamlined route into care can make health insurance feel more practical and responsive.”
