Bupa’s genomics-led Prevention Pathways for breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes have officially opened, making Bupa the first major private health insurance provider to offer high-risk customers preventive medication and surgery as part of their standard cover.

Bupa said it expects its new pathways to support 200,000 people by the end of 2027, including 36,000 through its breast cancer pathway and over 95,000 through its cardiovascular disease and diabetes pathways.

What Bupa’s Prevention Pathways cover

Until now, private medical insurance has largely operated on a treat-after-diagnosis basis, with cover kicking in once a condition presents. From 1 September 2026, that changes for the three conditions covered by Prevention Pathways. Eligible Bupa UK health insurance customers who are identified as genetically high-risk for breast cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes can access personalised interventions as part of their standard policy, rather than waiting for symptoms to appear or paying separately for preventive care.

For breast cancer, this can mean access to preventive medication such as Tamoxifen or risk-reducing surgery including mastectomy, guided by testing for genes including BRCA. For cardiovascular disease and diabetes, the pathway combines genetic and metabolic testing with appointments with Bupa GPs, lifestyle coaching, and £400 of funding towards Bupa’s Weight Management Plan, including GLP-1 weight loss medication where appropriate.

Building on Bupa’s Medication Check

The launch follows the introduction of Bupa’s Medication Check service in June, which uses genomic testing to establish which medications are likely to work, prove ineffective, or cause side effects for an individual. More than 10,000 tests have already been ordered since that service went live, with around 70,000 people expected to benefit by the end of 2027 and 28% anticipated to make long-term medication changes as a result.

Dr Rebecca Rohrer, Clinical Innovation and Genomics Director for Bupa, said: “By using modern innovation to truly understand a person’s DNA, these pathways fundamentally change how we approach healthcare. Where someone is at a genetically increased risk of serious disease, we’re now able to support them in taking early, informed action, potentially years before symptoms appear.”

Breast cancer accounts for around 15% of all new UK cancer cases and 30% of cases in women, and cases among younger people have risen by 14% in recent years, underlining why earlier understanding of genetic and family risk matters. Dr Rohrer added: “With the number of people diagnosed with cancers such as breast cancer continuing to grow, it has never been more important for people to understand their individual health risks earlier in life, enabling informed decisions about prevention, screening and long-term health.”

A new benchmark for private health insurance

For existing customers, there’s nothing to actively opt into. Bupa’s Prevention Pathways forms part of standard cover from 1 September 2026 for qualifying renewing Consumer and SME customers and will be open to new customers after a 12-month waiting period. Bupa’s corporate customers can access the service as an optional benefit.

The launch sits alongside Bupa’s existing DNA Health Check, available to both Bupa and non-Bupa customers on a pay-as-you-go basis, which uses Polygenic Risk Scoring to assess genetic risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease for those aged 40 to 69 (women) or 45 to 69 (men) with no current symptoms or personal history of the conditions tested.

Chris Steele, founder and editor of myTribe Insurance Experts, said: “This is the first time we’ve seen a mainstream health insurer build genetic risk prevention into its core policy to reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease and diabetes in the future. For anyone comparing providers, that’s a meaningful shift, not just a marketing line, because it changes what ‘cover’ actually means before someone gets ill. Bupa has raised the bar for what customers should expect from private medical insurance.”
