Bupa Health Insurance

Bupa’s health insurance policies include:

  • Individual - personal policies for a single account holder
  • Couples - policies for two individuals offered with a 5% discount as opposed to buying two separate policies.
  • Family health insurance - policies for adults and children with a 10% discount in comparison to buying individual policies.

Bupa By You

Bupa By You is a private health insurance policy which is only available through intermediaries (health insurance brokers), such as ourselves. Bupa By You can be customised and adapted to your personal requirements through the addition of extras, the choosing of a bespoke hospital list and, of course, the selection of the level of care you wish to have included. Here are some key facts about Bupa By You:

  1. Specialist support teams will guide you through any illnesses and treatments you receive.
  2. Cancer promise, meaning that Bupa will pay for any eligible cancer costs in full, subject to T&Cs.
  3. 24/7 Anytime Healthline - speak to a qualified nurse at any time.
  4. Mental health support and the availability of access to a trained adviser, and in some cases, a councillor.
  5. A choice of three hospital lists:
    a. Essentials, which gives you access to a select number of private facilities excluding London.
    b. Extended Choice, giving you access to a larger number of private facilities and a selection of London hospitals.
    c. Extended Choice with Central London, the most comprehensive hospital list which includes many of the major London hospitals.

Choose between Comprehensive or Treatment and Care

With Bupa By You Comprehensive, you’ll be covered for all of the eligible hospital’s treatments, including out-patient CT, Pet and MRI scans, as well as full mental health coverage for up to 28 days per policy year.

Members have a choice between full out-patient care which will cover them for all eligible out-patient consultations, diagnostic tests and physio, or a limited out-patient policy which has a spending limit associated with it.

Bupa By You Treatment & Care covers all eligible treatments received in hospital following a confirmed diagnosis. In addition, post-treatment consultations, diagnostic test and scans are paid in full within 6 months of receiving eligible treatment.

Bupa Fundamentals

Bupa Fundamentals is the cheaper option for anyone looking at health insurance. Again, it can only be purchased through a broker, and it can be an excellent option for someone who wants access to private medical treatment but is happy to either use the NHS or pay for diagnostic consultations.

Key facts about BUPA Fundamentals:

  1. You’re covered for eligible inpatient treatments
  2. You won’t be covered for any consultations with specialists
  3. You can access other services such as Bupa’s 24/7 helpline and medical support teams as paid extras

Diagnosis and treatment process

As we’ve mentioned, you aren’t covered to see a private specialist under Bupa Fundamentals, so what is the process you would need to follow?

  1. Your GP refers you to a specialist
  2. You choose to either see and pay for a private specialist or see one through the NHS
  3. If the specialist finds that you will require treatment, and you’re covered for that illness on your policy, Bupa will cover the cost of out-patient scans
  4. Bupa will then cover the cost of out-patient, day-patient and in-patient treatments.
  5. You’ll have the option to attend two follow-up consultations within 6 months of your treatment through Bupa

‍Bupa cancer cover

Bupa provides three options in terms of cancer cover:

  1. Full cancer cover - following your diagnosis, you’ll be fully covered for any treatments relating to your cancer, including the provision of palliative and end of life care,
  2. Cancer cover plus - if you’re diagnosed with cancer you won’t be covered for private treatment unless you can’t access it via the NHS.
  3. No cancer cover - as the name suggests, if you are diagnosed with cancer your treatment will take place through the NHS.
